Competition process

Voices of Olympia Canada (VOOC) is committed to supporting participants by providing promotional

materials as well as virtual mentorship throughout the competition, which is structured in a six-step

process.

  1. Enrollment

 

Schools or individuals interested in participating must complete the competition Enrollment online.

2. Procedure

 

a. Participating schools will select their participants from among Secondary 4 and 5 / Grade 10 and

11 students, who will work as a team.

b. Each participant must acknowledge the content of and sign the “VOOC Consent Form.”

c. Each school will assign an instructor to lead the teams representing their school.

d. Participants will submit, for approval by their instructor, the topic they have selected in relation to

the competition theme, specifying the method they will be using to carry out the project.

e. Using critical thinking and evidence-informed approaches, participants will use factual data from

valid, expert sources to analyze and objectively appraise the information.

 

3. Preliminary evaluation

 

The work done by the participants will provide evidence of personal and collective contributions in gaining a better understanding of the competition theme, and the translation of this understanding into action in the community.

a. Participants will send by email to the VOOC review panel the results of their work in the form of (i) a 15 pages essay written in APA format, and (ii) a 3-minutes video summarizing : the problem, the hypothesis, the method, and the proposed solution.

b. The review panel will use criteria set out by Voices of Olympia Canada to evaluate participants’ work.

c. Feedback from the panel will be used by participants to improve their work in preparation for the final evaluation.

4. Final evaluation

 

The final evaluation will be done either virtually or in-person. Participants will submit the final version of their work to the review panel, including:

a. An electronic version of an essay, written in APA format

b. A 3-minute video clip

c. A 20-minute oral presentation (in-person or via internet)

5. Annoucement of winners

 

Winners will be announced during the Awards Ceremony, then subsequently, through a press release.

6. Scholarship Awards Ceremony

 

a. The Voices of Olympia Canada Board of Directors will organize the scholarship awards

ceremony in-person, virtually or using a hybrid model.

b. An invitation will be sent to all schools to be shared with participants, their families, and friends.

c. Scholarships will be awarded to the four best projects:

- 1st Prize : $ 2 500

- 2nd Prize : $ 2 000

- 3rd Prize : $ 1 500

- 4th Prize : $ 1 000

Note: Each winning team must commit to providing VOOC with a brief progress report about the

status of their project the year after receiving the scholarship.

d. All participants will be honoured with a certificate attesting to the community hours dedicated to this competition.
